Structure of the standard UIHC Medical Genetics Residency Program


Year 1

6 months

Clinical Genetics (general genetics, prenatal genetics, metabolic genetics, neuromuscular / neurometabolic, Connective Tissue Disorder – CTD, inpatient consultations)

1 month

Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory

1 month

Clinical Molecular Genetics Laboratory

1 month

Clinical Biochemical Laboratory/ Newborn Screening Laboratory

3 months

Research Experience or Clinical Electives

Year 2

Clinical or Laboratory-Based Research Activity

There is an option to apply for a year-long Clinical Biochemical training with competitive funding from the Genzyme/ACMG Foundation.

Applicants may apply for the Genzyme Biochemical Genetics Fellowship Award after completion of their 1st year of residency. 

The objective of this Fellowship Award is to support a national fellowship program to encourage the recruitment and training of clinicians in the field of clinical biochemical genetics and especially in the diagnosis, management and treatment of individuals with metabolic diseases.  This award grants $75,000 per year.
