Description of Clinical Genetics Rotations

Clinical Cytogenetics Laboratory

The Cytogenetics Laboratory is directed by Shivanand R. Patil, PhD., a board certified Clinical Cytogeneticist. It is a full-service, CAP accredited clinical diagnostic laboratory with eight cytogenetic laboratory specialists who are certified, and three support staff members.  Annually, it processes more than 400 samples (prenatal, congenital, hematological and solid tumor) and utilizes state of the art technologies, including CGH array and FISH. A variety of materials are provided to CAP for inclusion in proficiency testing and for more than ten years, the laboratory served as one of 15 nationwide referees. Cytogenetic data on patients registered on various treatment protocols are also provided to two national cancer cooperative groups, our laboratory is approved as a reference laboratory for the Children’s Cancer Group and the Cancer and Leukemia Group B.  We are one of the few laboratories where the abnormality detection rate is in the top 10% of all laboratories that participate in these two groups.
