Medical Genetics Residency Program

Description of Clinical Genetics Rotations

Regional Genetic Consultation Service (RGCS)

The RGCS holds 80 or more clinics per year in 12 different cities throughout Iowa.  These clinics are staffed by the geneticists as well as genetic/nurse counselors.  The patients seen are similar to those seen in our general genetic and connective tissue clinics, including cancer genetics.  The program recently added metabolic clinics to the RGCS program as well.  These clinics are all day clinics with an average of 11 patients scheduled per clinic in both the adult and pediatric population. Cathy Evers, RN, MA, is the coordinator of the program and Val Sheffield, MD, PhD, is the program director.  This program is funded through a contract with the Iowa Department of Public Health.

Duration: 12 RGCS clinics (1-2 clinics per month) per year.
