University of Iowa Neonatology Fellowship Program

Application Information

Neonatology Faculty

Iowa's Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (NPM) Fellowship Program accepts up to 3 new fellows annually with a maximum of 8 fellows at one time.  Ours is one of only 9 NPM programs with NIH T32 institutional grant support for research training.  Accordingly, acceptance to our NPM program is dependent on the applicant’s interest in and potential for a successful career in academic neonatology.  We are particularly interested in attracting outstanding individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups, those who are handicapped, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The University of Iowa promotes excellence in education by increasing the diversity of the faculty, staff, and students.

Our NPM program does not sponsor applicants holding foreign visas unless they can demonstrate they are totally self-sufficient in providing all of their financial support.

Applicants to our program must:

  • Be currently enrolled in or have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident (i.e., alien resident, i.e., “green” card holder)

Our NPM program is a participant in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and accepts only ERAS applications.  As part of the ERAS application, all NPM programs are asking that letters of recommendation (LoR) be completed using our subspeciality's "NPM LoR” form.  Applicants are encouraged to go to Organization of Neonatology Training Program Directors' website for additional information regarding ERAS and the NRMP, including the NPM "Timeline" document.

Iowa NPM program applicants are required to provide their PL-1 and PL-2 Pediatric In-Training Exam Scores in an e-mail to Iowa’s NPM Fellowship Program Director (use address below).

All Iowa training programs, including our neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship program, are committed to fostering gender, ethnic and racial diversity. The University of Iowa began admitting African-American students from its inception in the mid-19th Century. It was also the first public institution in the country to admit women on an equal basis with men. This legacy and the importance of diversity in the global community of the 21st Century underscore our institution's commitment to improving access to opportunity for all members of society, particularly women and underrepresented minorities.
