Application Information

General Information:  Our 3 year program generally includes up to 3 fellows at a time, normally accepting one new fellow each year. This three-year program fulfills the requirements of the American Board of Pediatrics Sub-board of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine and is accredited by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. We are committed to the training of the next generation of academic pediatric pulmonologists, both those whose aspirations are to be clinician educators and those aiming for tenure track investigator positions.

Citizenship Requirements:  Because fellowship funding is primarily derived from federal training grants or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, we usually are only able to consider applications from U.S. citizens or permanent residents holding green cards. However, highly qualified foreign medical graduates who have an ECFMG certificate and do not need financial support may also apply.

Research Strengths:  Research opportunities during fellowship are particularly important for successfully transitioning to an academic career. The University of Iowa has a long history of excellence in basic research and is especially strong in cystic fibrosis research.  We also have very strong clinical research training. The University of Iowa is one of thirteen translational research centers for the CF Foundation and as such plays a central role in CF related clinical trials.  We are also privileged to be one of the first funded university programs with a Clinical & Translational Science Award (CTSA).  We have a variety of clinically oriented fellowship training options including:

Application Process:  We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) using ERAS applications.  Pediatric Pulmonology is in the Pediatric Specialties Spring Match which opens in January of the year prior to the start of fellowship (for example the Spring Match for 2012 opens 01/19/11).

Application Materials Needed:

  • Completed application through ERAS
  • Résumé/Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement (limit to one page)
  • Four letters of recommendation including:
    1. Medical School Dean's letter (same as required for residency)
