Top Reasons to Pick the
University of Iowa Children's Hospital for
Pediatric Fellowship Training

  1. Our fellowship program has a long tradition of producing outstanding pediatricians. Our program is fully ACGME compliant.

  2. Dedication to education: we have a fellows retreat and a weekly Fellows' Core Curriculum (Fellow Perspectives).

  3. The pediatric practice is sufficiently diverse -- by race, cultural background, and rich in pathology diversity. We see approximately 75 percent of the extremely ill and seriously ill children 18 years and under in the State and surrounding area. Thirteen percent of Children's Hospital of Iowa patients are non-Caucasian. We care for Latino, African-American, Bosnian, as well as Asian and subcontinent patients. Iowa patients come from a full cross-section of socio-economic status families, and they return for care as scheduled -- a very critical feature of fellow learning by witnessing the results of prescribed therapy.

  4. Strong academic faculty who are leaders in research and academic pediatrics will be your teachers. The Department of Pediatrics ranks among the top 3 publicly-supported departments of pediatrics among NIH research funding; members of the department are leaders in pediatric education nationally.

  5. The breadth of clinical experience and access to other subspecialty expertise means up-to-date teaching in every area of pediatrics for our fellows.

  6. New facilities are a 70-bed special care nursery, a 16-bed PICU, and renovated inpatient areas for the other pediatric service patients.

  7. As the first Magnet Hospital in Iowa, the nurses at the Children's Hospital of Iowa are wonderfully competent and professional. They are our partners in developing quality improvement and safe courses of therapy that lead to outstanding patient outcomes.

  8. The pediatric surgical programs at the University of Iowa Children's Hospital are exceptionally strong, with three ranking in the U. S. News and World Report top 10, including Ear, Nose and Throat, and Ophthalmology. As a result, in pediatrics you will see a huge breadth of surgical pathology and be taught by some of the world's best teachers.

  9. Ranked 20th in the nation by Child Magazine, the University of Iowa Children's Hospital The University of Iowa Children's Hospital is a solvent teaching hospital, an increasingly rare entity, and therefore can continue to staff adequately and, indeed, build new facilities and add state-of-the-art equipment.

  10. Iowa City is an excellent city in which to live when you are very busy. In August 2007, it was rated "One of the 30 Best Towns in America" by Outside magazine. Iowa City is safe, affordable and vibrant, with great performing arts, sports, and recreational opportunities. It is also within driving distance of larger cities such as Chicago (4 hours) and Kansas City (5 hours).
