Children with life threatening illnesses suffer from medical uneasiness, family denial and social “benign” neglect. This is true everywhere, but can be more problematic in a rural setting like Iowa because of the long distances between home and the closest medical center. The Pediatric Outreach Palliative Care of Iowa is currently setting up a statewide team of university experts, community medical professionals, and Hospice to reach every child and family in need, anywhere they may be in the state. The program will include professionals of different types to provide state of the art medical care, counseling, respite to family members in their role as caretakers, and patient and family integration in the community. Care plans will be tailored to every child and family, and modified to meet specific needs.
