Education: 1971 University of Minnesota - Minneapolis Social Welfare, BA1975 University of Chicago Social Work, MA 1980 University of Wisconsin - Madison Social Welfare, PhD Research Interests: My research focuses on the development and evaluation of interventions for adolescent substance abuse. Currently, we have a community-based project funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (or CSAT) (of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association or SAMHSA). We provide comprehensive assessments for youth and their families regarding substance use, mental health problems, social issues and a host of other issues. In addition to these data from the comprehensive assessments, we are comparing family based treatment for substance use (which has considerable evidence to support) with group treatment (not as much evidence but the standard of care for most drug treatment agencies). We recruit youth and their parents into this treatment evaluation study and interview them at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months following intake. Lab Members: Our research office is at Oakdale Hall (M304 is the main office) while the Adolescent Health & Resource Center (AHRC) is located at 509 Kirkwood Avenue in Iowa City. Dr. Douglas C. Smith is the Director of the AHRC and Dr. Margaret Cretzmeyer is a research consultant. I currently work with five doctoral students from the School of Social Work: Julie K. Williams, Bushra Sabri, Amanda Reedy, Scott Easton and Aaron Willis. Affiliations: I have affiliations with the School of Social Work, the College of Public Health (Department of Community and Behavioral Health, and the Department of Health Policy and Management) and the College of Nursing. I have memberships with the Society for Adolescent Medicine, The Society for Social Work and Research, and the National Association of Social Workers. Model System: Our primary research model is the clinical trial with youth or adults who abuse drugs. We also conduct cross sectional surveys and pilot studies with various groups of target populations (e.g., homeless youth in the Quad Cities). Recent Publications:
