Research Interests
As principal investigator for the Children Oncology Group, I conduct clinical trials in all areas of pediatric oncology. Our studies include phase II and phase III clinical trials, as well as epidemiology and biology studies. Practically every aspect of pediatric oncology is included (therapeutic trials in childhood lymphocytic leukemia, non-lymphocytic leukemias, brain tumors, liver tumors, eye tumors, renal tumors, soft tissue sarcomas, fibrous tumors, and bone tumors). Non therapeutic studies include quality of life issues, epidemiology, tumor biology, and pharmacology. Between 40 and 109 studies are active at any given point. My personal emphasis is on renal tumors, fibrous tumors, brain tumors and leukemia.
In the area of palliative care, I am involved in the development of a unique outreach program for the delivery of palliative care to children in a rural setting through a state-wide network of health professionals. New modalities of palliative care will be investigated as well.
In the field of storage diseases, I conduct studies into the treatment of Gaucher’s disease, and participate in the international database for the study of its natural history.
