Department of Pediatrics: Residency

Outpatient Services

University of Iowa Children's Hospital

The Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent medicine conducts the majority of its on-site ambulatory activities in the state of the art Family Care Center (FCC). FCC General Pediatrics clinics include Adolescent Clinic, Acute Care Clinic, Diagnostic Clinic and Growth Clinic which provide a broad spectrum of health maintenance, acute and chronic conditions common to the practice of general pediatrics. During the resident’s assignment to the clinic, he/she participates in the management of many acute and chronic problems of pediatric-age patients. The FCC is a multi-specialty primary care clinic with contiguous clinic space for General Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and General Pediatrics. Pharmacy, radiology and clinical laboratories are adjacent to the clinical space affording added convenience for patients and families. Pediatric clinic visits account for approximately 20,000 of the 85,000 annual visits to the FCC.

The Pediatric Subspecialty Outpatient Clinic is a cheerful and bustling facility, which provides a wealth of learning experiences for resident education. While rotating through the various subspecialty services, residents are assigned to subspecialty clinics, which may include cardiology, child neurology, hematology/oncology and rheumatology, endocrinology, nephrology, genetics, neuromuscular diseases, infectious diseases, gastroenterology and nutrition, allergy and pulmonary diseases, and psychology.

Both clinics provides well-equipped examination rooms, treatment rooms, conference rooms, and observation teaching rooms. Diagnostic facilities within the clinic include a hematology laboratory, speech and hearing center, pulmonary function exercise laboratory, and resident laboratory. An efficient and dedicated nursing staff is an integral part of the clinic team. Consultative services from nutritionists, psychologists, social workers and audiologists are readily available.
