The members of the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine
are strongly committed to excellence in resident teaching, patient care,
and research. The Family Care Center General Pediatric Clinic is the primary
site for University of Iowa Children's Hospital based primary care clinical
activities. Residents are assigned to block rotations in the FCC General
Pediatric Clinic during each year of their residency training. Clinic
experiences include Acute Care Clinic, Adolescent Clinic, Diagnostic Clinic,
Growth Clinic and Resident Continuity clinics. In addition, behavior management,
attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorders and child protection clinics
are staffed by division faculty and provide residents additional experience
in more complicated problems in the area of general pediatrics. Division
faculty also serve as attending physicians in the low-risk "normal"
newborn nursery and on the general pediatrics inpatient service "Blue
Team".
Each resident has his/her own half-day child health/continuity care clinic
per week. These continuity clinics generally occur on the same half-day
each week with the same team of residents and faculty. During their continuity
clinic experience, the resident sees a variety of pre-scheduled health
maintenance and acute care visits. As the primary care physician, the
resident provides continuity of care to these children with special attention
given to anticipatory guidance, developmental and behavioral issues.
Division faculty have over 150 years experience in academic general pediatrics
and 25 years in the private practice of pediatrics. Clinical interests
include child protection services, failure to thrive, lead poisoning,
chronic constipation, encopresis, sports medicine, adolescent health,
adolescent substance abuse and international health.
Research interests include infectious diseases among children in daycare,
the pathophysiology of chronic constipation, breastfeeding promotion,
medical student curriculum development and evaluation, medical informatics
and interventions that interrupt adverse health behaviors in children.
