The Division of Allergy and Pulmonary offers broad training in the management
of respiratory and allergic diseases. During the month-long rotation on
the service during the second year, the resident gains in-depth experience
in managing asthma in a manner that permits normal functioning and prevents
symptoms that require hospitalization and emergency medical care. Involvement
with the patients in the cystic fibrosis center permits opportunities
to see the spectrum of this disease. Allergic rhinitis, atopic eczema,
chronic urticaria and various congenital and acquired lung disorders are
also seen. Experience is gained in performing and interpreting office
pulmonary function, allergy skin tests, and tests of immunologic competence.
Fellowships are offered that provide subspecialty training in respiratory
and allergic diseases leading to board eligibility in pediatric pulmonology.
Research interests of members of the division include pharmacological
management of asthma, epithelial cell biology of the lung, and lung care
delivery for asthma.
