Over 5,000 infants and children with congenital and acquired heart disease
are seen by the Division of Cardiology each year. These patients afford
residents an excellent opportunity to familiarize themselves with the
diagnosis and management of pediatric cardiac problems. About 400 cardiac
catheterizations are performed annually, in addition to the management
of over 150 pediatric cardiac surgical patients. Regular conferences are
held including cardiac catheterization, cardiac surgery, cardiac pathology,
graphics, and journal review conferences.
During their rotation through the service, the residents actively participate
in daily cardiology clinics and provide management of hospitalized cardiac
patients on a consultative basis. The residents also participate in cardiac
clinics throughout the state by means of the regional Child Health Specialty
Clinics program. Residents receive training in electrocardiography and
exposure to echocardiography, cardiac catheterization, and angiographic
interpretation.
An accredited three-year fellowship program in pediatric cardiology provides
training in both clinical cardiology and cardiovascular research. Research
interests of the division faculty include coronary risk factors in childhood,
conduction and rhythm disturbances, developmental aspects of cardiac muscle
and cardiac contractile proteins, cardiac embryology, echocardiography,
and interventional cardiac catheterization.
