Gastroenterology is a growing clinical subspecialty in
the Department of Pediatrics. Residents are actively
involved in the care of inpatients with primary or secondary
gastrointestinal disease. More in-depth exposure to
pediatric gastroenterology is available through an elective
in which residents participate in outpatient clinics,
inpatient consultations, pediatric
gastroenterology/hepatology outpatient clinic, and various
procedures performed by pediatric gastroenterology staff
including fiber-optic endoscopy, percutaneous liver biopsy,
24-hour pH monitoring for gastroesophageal reflux, and
manometric studies of the esophagus and the anal/ rectal
region.
The Division of Gastroenterology also has active ongoing
research programs of both a clinical and basic science
nature. Research interests of the faculty include proton
pump inhibitor therapy, use of electrolyte-free polyethylene
glycol for bowel preparation and therapy of constipation,
immunology of inflammatory bowel disease, and intestinal
iron transportation. A fellowship in pediatric
gastroenterology leading to board eligibility is offered.
Elective rotations in the research laboratories of faculty
are available.
