The Division of Medical Genetics serves not only the Department of Pediatrics
and University of Iowa Children's Hospital, but also all other UIHC clinical
units. It includes genetic counseling clinics, a neuromuscular disease
program; cytogenetics and molecular genetic laboratories. The division
collaborates with the state Department of Health in operating a statewide
regional genetics consultation service. Faculty collaborate with medical
geneticists in other clinical departments to maintain programs in prenatal
diagnosis, behavioral genetics, genetic eye disorders, hereditary deafness,
skeletal dysplasias, cancer, bioinformatics, and craniofacial anomalies.
Active research interests of faculty include dysmorphology, molecular
genetics of single gene and complex disorders, biochemical genetics, neuromuscular
disorders, cytogenetics/molecular cytogenetics, teratology, and genomics.
Faculty receive funding from the National Institutes of Health, as well
as the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and other private foundations.
Residents participate actively in the inpatient and the outpatient evaluations,
treatment, and counseling of families with genetic problems. An elective
experience is available. Advanced training at the postdoctoral fellowship
level is offered in clinical genetics as well as in laboratory areas,
such as clinical cytogenetics and molecular genetics.
