The Division of Child Neurology provides the resident with a concentrated
exposure to the diagnosis and management of neurological disorders in childhood.
Service and teaching activities include daily inpatient ward rounds and
outpatient clinical work. The neurology clinic serves approximately 50 patients
per week and is comprised of referrals from physicians in practice outside
UIHC and from other departments within the hospital. Residents rotating
on the neurology service participate in a weekly child neurology conference
and are encouraged to take part in the patient presentation and discussion
at the weekly pediatric neuroradiology seminar. Other teaching conferences
include a neuropathology conference and a combined neurology-neurosurgery
seminar.
Investigative interests within the section include the longitudinal study
of intracranial neoplasms and neurologic infections in children, ultrastructural
histochemical analysis of certain types of infantile myopathies, and genetic
mapping of fascioscapulohumeral dystrophy. Laboratory investigation pertains
to the epidemiology of cytomegalovirus infections.
The division is approved for a three-year residency in child neurology.
