Psychology

University of Iowa Children's Hospital

The Division of Psychology provides specialty clinic evaluations and treatment in the following areas: attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, behavioral disorders, chronic health impairment, learning disorders, and neuropsychological disorders. The division also provides outpatient and inpatient consultation to children with a variety of medical conditions. Pediatric residents participate in these psychology clinics during their required developmental and behavioral pediatrics rotation. The content of the clinical experience includes supervised parent interviews regarding behavior, emotional status, school achievement, and social functioning of the patient. The resident also participates in structured behavioral observation to learn about the technique of applied behavioral analysis. Psychological testing is observed by the resident and the resident is taught some psychological screening tests. Residents who choose an elective rotation on this service may acquire further understanding of common psychological problems of children and adolescents.
