The University of Iowa Children's Hospital is located on the health science campus
of The University of Iowa. The campus consists of the University of Iowa
Hospitals and Clinics, all of the University's health sciences colleges,
and the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences. The Colleges of Medicine,
Dentistry, Nursing, and Pharmacy have a total enrollment of over 2,000
students. The Hardin Library contains over 211,000 bound volumes and some
3,400 serials and journals. The medical center is an integral part of
the University and has a long-standing tradition of excellence in patient
care and education.
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
The University of Iowa Hospitals
and Clinics is a large and well-supported teaching hospital complex
providing tertiary level services for the entire state and region, while
at the same time creating an environment for health education programs
at all levels and in all specialties. As one of the largest of the nation's
university-owned teaching hospitals, University Hospitals, with 855 beds,
admits over 40,000 patients annually and has over 540,000 annual outpatient
visits.
University Hospital's clinical services are organized through 18 departments:
anesthesia, hospital dentistry, dermatology, family practice, internal
medicine, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology,
orthopaedics, otolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology,
radiation oncology, surgery, and urology. Each clinical service offers
residency programs and fellowship programs as applicable, which are directed
by faculty members from the College of Medicine and the College of Dentistry.
Over the last 20 years, there has been a relocation of virtually all
patient care functions to contemporary accommodations, including new intensive
care units, ambulatory clinics, diagnostic and therapeutic units, and
inpatient accommodations to replace outmoded facilities from the early
1900's. Included in this capital replacement program is a state-of-the-art
facility for the care of pediatric patients, known as the Children's Hospital
of Iowa.
Beyond the bricks and mortar, University Hospitals has a substantial
investment in advanced medical technology. The University of Iowa Hospitals
and Clinics array of state-of-the-art medical technology include
PET scanning, laser angioplasty, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, cine CT scanning,
lithotripsy, and in vitro fertilization. A sophisticated computer information
system allows rapid retrieval of patient-related data.
Residents who train at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics experience
a commitment to clinical excellence, including quality care delivered
in a wide range of services, the most up-to-date medical technology, a
medical staff comprised of senior physicians who have national reputations
in their fields, excellent nursing and other professional staffs with
rigorous requirements for quality, and highly respected clinical and basic
science research programs.
The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine
The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver
College of Medicine at the University of Iowa contributes significantly
to the strength of The University of Iowa Children's Hospital. With a large full-time
faculty of over 600 members, the college carries out its functions of
education, research, and service. Talented faculty bring fresh ideas,
new techniques, and enthusiasm to the teaching of over 700 medical students
and 1,000 residents, fellows and graduate students in various training
programs.
At a time when competition for private and public funding of medical
education and research has intensified, funding agencies continue to recognize
and reward the exemplary research conducted in Iowa. The Carver College
of Medicine holds a superior ranking among schools of medicine in public
universities in the amount of funding from the National Institutes of
Health.
The College of Medicine's teaching and research facilities are located
adjacent to the University Hospitals and Clinics allowing scientists from
both basic science and clinical departments to easily pursue interdisciplinary
research and education in such areas as human molecular genetics, immunology,
molecular and cell biology, and neuroscience.
The faculty, students, resources, and funding at The University of Iowa
The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine at The University
