Department of Pediatrics: Residency
Quotes from Residents
University of Iowa Children's Hospital
"The hospital serves a large region with a diverse patient population. Being a mid-size program, this gives us the advantage of a relatively high frequency of rare pathology paired with one-on-one teaching."
Ari Fried, 2nd year resident
"The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics has the advantage of being
a referral center for all of Iowa yet being located in a relatively small
city. This allows us the advantage of seeing al of

the interesting cases associated with a greater population base, while not being overwhelmed
with too many admissions of the same common problems."
Nick Von Bergen, 2005 graduate
"The education is top notch, the people are very nice both at the hospital and around town. I am very happy to be here."
John Wrasse, 2005 PL1
"An advantage of this program is that it is a large referral center
in a smaller city. This means that we get enogh 'bread and butter' medicine
to become proficient, but see a tremedous range of pathology in patients
who are brought in from a very large catchment area.
The University, with a large number of international students, faculty,
and other visitors, makes for a surprisingly diverse patient population.
I am from New York City, and while it's not quite as diverse as this,
I have not been disappointed.
The thing I like most about this program is the commitment to education.
Most teaching is done by faculty, who love teaching and teach well. It's
the main reason I chose to come here."
Lisa Madden, 2004 graduate
"It is a pleasant surprise that Iowa City is so culturally diverse and
even offers classical Indian dance performances. It's a great place to
raise a family. The city is small but its great that you are not caught
in traffic every morning. The residency program is well organized with
very friendly and helpful staff."
Farzana Pashankar, 2003 graduate
"The faculty and other residents here continually impress me with their
desire to work together to improve patient care as well as physician education.
One of the other benefits of working here is the understanding of the
importance of family. This is not only true of the program, but also of
the people of Iowa City."
Shawn Jobe, 2002 graduate
"Imagine receiving superb education in a relaxed environment with a group
of intelligent and caring people. If you feel better now about residency,
join us!"
Alex Soldatou, 2002 graduate
"The people are what makes the Iowa program great. My fellow residents
are the most down to earth and fun people to work with that I could ever
choose. The pediatric faculty are brillant in their respective fields.
At the same time, they are easily approachable whenever I have a question.
There is a collegial atmosphere between all the people involved in my
training. Residency can be very hard, but working with great people makes
it worthwhile. I know that when I leave my residency I will be a very
capable pediatrician because I am learning from the very best role models."
Saranbir Singh Ahuja, 2002 graduate
"I like Iowa City, having come from a similar university town in Missouri.
It's big enough to have the amenities a university can provide--shows,
concerts, small museums, theater, etc.--and small enough to avoid big
city problems like traffic, crime (ok, it's not completely crime-free
either!), etc. The restaurants are great to visit after a long day/week/month
of work. And of course, there's always the mall and the numerous downtown
shops. I found my all-time favorite bookstore here in Iowa City--actually,
several favorites!"
Michelle Beumer, 2002 graduate
"Coming from the Northeast I was somewhat concerned about coming to Iowa,
but Iowa City is such a progressive town. The arts and outdoor activities
remind me a lot of Boston. Iowa itself is not very diverse, but the University
makes up for that with many families from all over the world. There are
quite a few graduate and faculty members who are here from far away lands.
If you enjoy college sports, this is a great Big 10 town with some excellent
sports teams and easy access to tickets. The music scene is quite impressive.
The training program has friendly, approachable people who enjoy teaching
and learning. There are plenty of zebra cases here so as to become familiar
with them and know they exist, and you will become expert in the common
illnesses that all pediatricians need to have a handle on."
Dan DiMeo, 2002 graduate
Having lived in Manhattan, NYC for the four years prior to moving to
Iowa City, I was concerned about the cultural diversity and opportunities
here. I was very pleasantly surprised. For example last month on returning
from my vacation I overheard four different languages in the airport.
Having come from a school where interns carried 10-12 patients and admitted
5-6 each night on call, I find that this program has a better balance.
The patient volume is more than adequate to gain a good understanding
and yet allows me time to actually process information and read about
my patients. I love the smallness of Iowa City. It offers the opportunity
of stress free living, a very welcome change from NYC. Being a busy resident
and being able to participate in "real life" activities is great. There
are several very good restaurants in town offering a diverse array of
foods. The theatre opportunities are good too. Hancher certainly with
all its nationally touring shows, but more impressively, Riverside Theatre.
The acting we have experienced there is actually better than the off-broadway
shows in NYC and at 1/5th the cost! I feel the spectrum of diseases I
have seen in my first two years of residency has been impressive. I have
seen all the common problems and many of the zebras too."
Rajeev Vibhakar, 2002 graduate
"I was attracted to Iowa because of its geographical location-in the
midwest, friendly people, close to family and friends. Iowa City is a
good university town with a wide variety of activities and things to see
and do. I came here because I didn't want to admit 25 RSV patients a night.
The patient volume is excellent for learning and seeing a wide variety
of diseases. The faculty are available, we have regular teaching conferences
and the residents are friendly!"
Michelle Beumer, 2002 graduate
"I came away from the Univeresity of Iowa Pediatrics program with a fabulous education, a sense of 'family' from the other residents and staff, and wonderful memories."
Laura Kehrberg, MD, '99
"My training at the University of Iowa Department of Pediatrics prepared me for the challenges of private practice pediatrics, but even more, gave me many friends for a lifetime."
David Kragenbrink, MD, '94 Currently practicing General Pediatrics in Dubuque, IA
"What I most value about my experience training at the University of Iowa Pediatrics program is the expertise, dedication, and devotion of the faculty. They gave invaluable teaching and also demonstrated continuous committment to children."
Norma McGuire, MD, '90 Currently practicing General Pediatrics
