New compulsions

Several new compulsions are replacing the now old-fashioned emphasis on counting calories. The most common one is counting fat grams. Anything less than 40 grams of fat per day is almost impossible to live on, yet we see many students trying to live on 5, 10, or even no fat grams. Recent studies have shown that heart-healthy lipids (fish, nuts, olive oil, etc) are associated with good health and weight management.

Several weight programs are now measuring inches rather than pounds. This simply produces a different focus for compulsive worry. Nonetheless, fitness to increase lean muscle mass, if not done compulsively, is highly beneficial.
