Blood Vessel Function and Cognition

Investigator: Dr. Dave Moser

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in both the general and elderly U.S. populations. Dr. David Moser is currently leading a series of studies to examine the relationship between vascular disease and cognitive decline in the elderly. Vessel function is tested in large vessels using the technique of "brachial artery flow mediated dilation," and in small vessels using brachial artery administration of vasoactive agents. A wide range of cognitive abilities are assessed, including intellect, memory, language, spatial skills, and executive functions.

Preliminary data suggest that vessel function is strongly associated with cognitive performance in elderly subjects. Vessel function may be used in the future to identify and treat people who are at particular risk for developing vascular-related cognitive decline.
