A Research Study for Behavioral
Problems in Persons with Memory Disorders

Principal Investigator: Susan K. Schultz, MD

Tests the use of the medication risperidone for behavior problems that may occur in persons with memory problems

These may include distressing behaviors, unusual perceptions, and/or emotions in persons with memory disorders (dementia)

This study seeks to treat behavior, not the memory problem.

Who May Participate?
People diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, who are having difficulties with:

  • Seeing or hearing things that no one else can see or hear
  • Having ideas or worries that are unfounded
  • Having problems involving being angry, restless, nervous, or irritable for no apparent reason

What is Involved?

  • The study will last for a maximum of nine months
  • The study involves research medication (FDA-approved) and/or placebo (sugar pill) provided at no cost
  • It involves meeting with the study team regularly to assess specific problem
  • The visits would occur on several occasions during the study to evaluate any changes in symptoms, caregiver burden, and your overall health

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s

  • Misplacing/losing things
  • Accusing others of taking or misplacing items that are missing
  • Forgetting words and phrases in conversation
  • Misremembering past events
  • Confusion over date and time
  • Repetitive questioning
  • Wandering
  • Increased disorientation
  • Agitation
  • Abrupt changes in mood
