This is a National Institute of Mental Health Study on how panic disorder may be transmitted within families. The results may lead to a better understanding of the biology of panic disorder and to improved treatment.
We are seeking healthy individuals, aged 18 to 30 years, who themselves have never had a panic attack but who have a brother, sister, or parent who has been treated for panic disorder. Volunteers must have no history of treatment for mental disorder and must be able to drive to the University of Iowa for participation. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
Volunteers will be interviewed regarding any problems they, or their family members, may have had with mood or anxiety. They will then participate in a series of procedures in which they breathe differing mixtures of carbon dioxide and oxygen. They will also provide a blood sample. The entire procedure takes between two and four hours. Compensation of $100 will be provided.
