Principal Investigator: Donald W. Black, MD
The primary goal of this study is to determine whether pathological gambling runs in families, as well as other disorders such as depression or alcohol abuse. To date, there are no direct family interview studies of pathological gambling, yet anecdotal collections indicate that it does tend to run in families. The results of this study could have widespread implications for scientists, researchers, counselors, and others in the field. Ultimately, it is hoped that those struggling with this disorder would benefit from the knwledge gained.
100 gamblers and their first-degree relatives (parents, siblings, and children over the age of 18) will be interviewed. Their interviews will be compared to the interviews of 100 nongamblers and their first-degree relatives. Blood will be drawn for DNA testing from persons with pathological gambling.
Interviews can take place at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics--mileage paid--or the researcher can travel to a more convenient location. The interview itself takes a few hours, after which there will be questionnaires to fill out. Everything is kept completely confidential. Compensation is provided.
