Current Residents: Family Practice/Psychiatry


Dustin DeYoung Dustin DeYoung received a B.S. in Physiological Sciences from the University of California, Los Angeles in June 2003. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in May 2008. His professional interests include addiction medicine, including substance and alcohol abuse, and providing comprehensive care for those with medical and psychiatric conditions.

Julie Voelker Julie Voelker completed undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of Illinois-Urbana in 2004 and graduated from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 2008. She is interested in providing mental health care within a rural primary care setting.

Erik Vanderlip
Erik Vanderlip attended Rice University and received a B.A. degree in Biology in May 2002. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in May 2007 with an M.D. His professional interests include indigent healthcare, primary care and mental health.

Bess Mehring
Bess Mehring attended the University of Missouri-Columbia and Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University graduating in June 2005. After completing a year in Family Medicine she joined the combined Family Practice/Psychiatry Residency Program in 2007. Her professional interests include geriatric psychiatry.

Stephen Pallone Stephen Pallone received a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of Virginia Charlottesville, VA in 2002. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006. His professional interests include geriatric medicine and psychiatry, and the interface of chronic disease and behavioral patterns complicating patients’ management.

Benjamin Shepherd Benjamin Shepherd received his B.S. in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2002. He graduated with an M.D. from the University of Illinois-Rockford in 2006. His professional interests include rural mental health, healthcare disparities, and addiction.

Michael Simison Michael Simison grew up in sunny Southern California. In 1999, he received B.S. degrees in both Biology and Chemistry from the University of California, Irvine. He received his M.D. degree in 2004 from Drexel University College of Medicine. Currently in his fifth year of the Family Practice/Psychiatry residency program, Michael wishes to pursue a career in outpatient psychiatric care.
