    Residents and Fellows Training Programs

Fellowships

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program
The University of Iowa's Department of Psychiatry has a strong Child and Adolescent Psychiatry division. In this division, trainees have the opportunity to complete their fellowship either during or after completing their adult psychiatry program of study. Trainees may enter the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program during their third or fourth year of training, commonly done by residents in our psychiatry residency, or they may pursue the child and adolescent fellowship after completing their adult training. For curriculum and details, see Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program.

Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship
The Geriatric Psychiatry division provides a one year clinical training program across the full spectrum of care. The fellowship is fully accredited by ACGME. The Department of Psychiatry has a 14-bed geriatric inpatient unit dedicated to treat adults 65 and over who have a variety of disabling psychiatric disorders and who cannot be cared for acutely at home or in nursing homes. The Outreach Service provides direct care to residents of nursing homes in a 60-miles radius. The fellow is assigned to one nursing home in the Iowa City area for the year. The Mental Health and Aging Clinic provides outpatient diagnostic and follow-up services for ambulatory older adults. In the PGY-5 fellowship program, additional experience is required in Geriatric Medicine, Neurology, Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Palliative Care, and long-term hospital settings. Two members of the department have Geriatric Psychiatry certification and additional members have extensive experience in geriatric psychiatry and medicine. Elective time and research participation are available. As this is a small program, details of the clinical experience can be modified to meet the fellow's needs and interests. Examples include additional time with Palliative Care, Medical Psychiatry or Research.

The overlap of dementing disorders with depressive illness is a particular clinical interest, as are psychotic disorders in late life, and the behavioral and emotional consequences of early-onset dementias such as Huntington's disease. Case conferences, seminars, and other educational opportunities are scheduled regularly, some in cooperation with the Family Practice Geriatric Medicine Service. Occasional "field trips" are organized to see older citizens enjoying active lives in the community or to see how policy and regulation of services for older adults are organized and delivered.

Mental Health Clinical Research Center Fellowship
This is a one-to-three year fellowship program, funded jointly by NIMH and NIDA, for training in the neurobiology of major psychotic disorders and clinical neuroscience. The fellowship is designed for either: 1) psychiatrists who have recently completed residency or are beginning their fourth year of residency and/or; 2) persons who have recently completed Ph.D.s in psychology (clinical or experimental), neuroscience, biostatistics, biomedical engineering, or related fields. Major areas of activity include brain imaging (MRI, fMRI, & PET), biostatistics, cognitive neuroscience, neuroanatomy and neuropathology, neuropharmacology, and molecular genetics. The primary focus is on schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, as well as addiction. Fellows will supervise recruitment, assessment, and clinical management of subjects. They will perform basic research under the preceptorship of one of the senior staff in the following areas: structural (MRI) and/or functional (PET/SPECT) brain imaging; diagnoses; and phenomenology; neuropharmacology; epidemiology; and neuropsychology.
