Residents and Fellows Training Programs
PGY-4 Year Testimonial
"The striking thing about the fourth year is how individual it is. After three years of following the same schedule as your colleagues you get a chance to branch off in the direction you want to go. Oh, there are still lectures, grand rounds, and a continuity of care clinic a half day a week. But beyond that, choices abound. Many residents pick electives that will relate to their post residency careers, others take the chance to get an early start on their Child Adolescent Fellowships, others yet get tapped to serve as Chief Resident for six months or so. But some of the coolest things the fourth residents are doing this year weren't even on the elective list until they asked about it. One resident moving into forensic psychiatry is sitting in on Law school classes while also taking some epidemiology courses, another is working on a MPH, while a third is starting coursework on an advanced degree in Biostatistics. For my part, I've already spent eight months working as Chief resident, but I'll be taking electives in neuropsychology, forensics, community outreach and psychiatry and the humanities while also working with the faculty on two research projects. When I started here as an R-1, I wondered how exactly I was going to fill a year's worth of electives. The previous three years answered that question; now I just have to fit in everything I want do in just 12 months."
