The residency training program at the University of Iowa is four years in duration and most residents enter in the first postgraduate year. All rotations are in Iowa City with supervision and teaching provided by the faculty, at either the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics or the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Third Year
During their third year, residents are assigned to outpatient services at UIHC and the VA. Residents follow patients with a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including psychotic disorders, affective disorders, personality disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders, dementia, anxiety disorders, and somatoform disorders. A range of outpatient treatment modalities are used, including psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, intensive outpatient treatment and outpatient substance abuse treatment. Residents spend twelve months in the outpatient clinic and follow the same patient case load throughout the third year. Residents also do a short rotation at a local care facility, providing medication management.
Fourth Year
The fourth year of residency is comprised of elective rotations. During this year, residents are encouraged to explore areas that will help them prepare for their career, including research opportunities, further inpatient and clinical experiences, or graduate programs such as a Masters in Public Health. Residents maintain a continuity of care clinic one afternoon a week. Residents are also eligible to apply for early admission to two-year fellowships such as child psychiatry subspecialty training or fellowship training in clinical neurobiology and schizophrenia research.
