Welcome and Introduction
The University of Iowa Child Psychiatry Residency is a fully-accredited by the Residency Review Committee of the ACGME. Training is accomplished through direct clinical teaching, lectures, seminars, individual and group supervision, and journal clubs. The main venue for the training program is the University of Iowa Child Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic and the Inpatient unit. Residents leave the campus for school and community consultation and supervision.
The program provides the intimacy and collegiality of a small training venue with the excellence provided by association with a top-notch research university. The current faculty of five Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists and two Psychologists is complemented by a stable and experienced ancillary staff who also contribute immeasurably to the residents' clinical educational experience. Group supervision and seminars are usually attended by six to eight residents, allowing for a lot of open discussion and debate. In addition to our on-site staff, we are able to draw from all of the resources of the University of Iowa to provide expert speakers on a number of topics.
Clinical experiences include a four-to-six month rotation on our 14-bed inpatient unit, where caseload fluctuates between three and eight patients at any given time. In the outpatient clinic, up to four hours is allowed for a new-patient diagnostic appointment. Follow-up clinic appointments are scheduled with enough time to allow for staff input and supervision on a case-by-case basis. Faculty and staff are readily accessible to the residents for questions most of the time; doors are traditionally "open."
The goal of this program is to train interested and qualified doctors to be excellent clinical Child and Adolescent psychiatrists while also providing opportunities for research and teaching. We hope that residents complete the program with a well-developed ability to maintain their ongoing education and look critically at the medical literature. Residents who complete the program successfully should be eligible for ABPN certification.
