Who We Are

The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry has been led by Samuel Kuperman, MD, since 1989. Anne Kolar, MD, joined the leadership team in 2005 as the Residency Director. Paula Swygard has been the division’s Residency Coordinator since 1989.

In addition to eight faculty psychiatrists, the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry clinic also employs several psychologists, nurse practitioners, social workers, education specialists, and a speech language pathologist. The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry inpatient unit is a 15-bed unit that has its own staff of nurses, nursing assistants, education specialists, social workers, and a recreation therapist.

Like the Adult Psychiatry program at the University of Iowa, the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry program has a strong neurobiological focus, with a solid balance of psychotherapy training. Research opportunities are available, but research is not required. Faculty members are approachable with diverse backgrounds, training, and specialties.
