Originally from Queens, New York, Dr. Buatti received his college and medical degrees from Georgetown University in Washington DC. After completing residencies in both internal medicine and radiation oncology, Dr. Buatti became a professor in both Radiation Oncology and Neurosurgery at the University of Florida. Dr. Buatti came to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 1999, becoming chair of the newly created Department of Radiation Oncology in 2001. He has been a lead force in propelling the department to the cutting edge of medicine.
A world renown radiation oncologist, Dr. Buatti's principle interests are in tumors of the central nervous system and treating tumors with optically-guided radiotherapy. Dr. Buatti has written a book on LINAC radiosurgery, authored 15 book chapters, over 100 research articles, and given over 140 invited lectures on radiosurgery and radiation therapy. Additionally, Dr. Buatti currently holds 3 patents on specialized technology for radiation oncology.
Dr. Buatti's driving focus is continually improving cancer treatments by developing new technology and research. His professional focus lies in developing better treatments for cancers of the central nervous system and developing better radiation therapy techniques by applying extracranial stereotaxis. Dr. Buatti is an active member of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, serving on the Executive Committee, the Tumor Imaging program and as co-chair for the Data and Safety Monitoring Committee for the clinical trials program.
