Graduating magna cum laude with his B.A., and then cum laude with his MD, Dr. Dion completed a surgical residency as a lieutenant in the United States Navy. After his service in the Navy, Dr. Dion completed a residency with University of Iowa's Radiation Oncology program and also had private radiation oncology practices in Dubuque, Iowa and then Sheridan, Wyoming. Dr. Dion has also served as an emergency medical doctor in both Davenport and Minnesota.

An experienced radiation oncologist, Dr. Dion's interests focus on radiation injury and damage and medical ethics. Dr. Dion was part of a UIHC research team investigating pentoxifylline, a drug now used to help with radiation damage to soft tissues. Dr. Dion currently leads UIHC Radiation Oncology based in Clinton, Iowa at Mercy Medical Center.
