Originally from Minnesota, Dr. Dornfeld received medical scientist training, earning both an MD and PhD After completing his residency in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Dr. Dornfeld was asked to remain as a staff physician. He then became the chief of service at the Ann Arbor VA Medical Center in 2000. Dr. Dornfeld came to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 2002, as both a radiation oncology physician and a cancer researcher. Utilizing his medical scientist training, Dr. Dornfeld leads the translational research team, bringing the Department of Radiation Oncology's cancer researchers together with clinicians, providing an effective bridge to streamline new and novel cancer therapies into the clinics, offering cancer patients more treatment options.
Dr. Dornfeld's principle interests are in tumors of the head and neck and cancer genetics. Dr. Dornfeld currently has his own cancer research laboratory, which studies thymine depletion and its effects on cancer using yeast as a modeling system. Serving part time as a cancer researcher, Dr. Dornfeld also serves as graduate student supervisor for PhD candidates in the Department of Radiation Oncology.
Dr. Dornfeld's professional focus lies in developing better treatments for cancers of the head and neck and novel approaches to cancer therapies through basic science research. Dr. Dornfeld is an active member of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, serving in Program 4: Free Radical Cancer Biology.
