Will I need blood counts (CBCs) during my treatments?Radiation to some areas of the body may result in lowered white cell blood counts and if chemotherapy is given along with radiation, this risk is increased. A lowered white cell blood count decreases your ability to fight infections. Any fever, chills, or signs of infection should be reported to your nurse or radiation oncologist. If low platelet counts occur, the risk of spontaneous bleeding is increased because platelets are cells that help blood to clot. Any small red spots or bruises that occur without apparent reason should be reported to your radiation oncologist. Your hemoglobin level may also need to be checked during your treatment. Not all radiation treatments decrease the blood counts significantly. Your nurse or radiation oncologist will advise you if regular blood tests are needed.
