Clinical Rotations


Residents take 36 months of clinical radiation oncology rotations, 4 months of additional required rotations and 8 months of electives. Schedules become individualized based on your interests and desires to repeat certain rotations as well as what electives you plan.

Required rotations

Clinical Radiation Oncology – 36 months.
Three-month rotations through the following services:

Dr. John Buatti Pediatrics, Head & Neck, Skin, Central Nervous System Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Extracranial Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Craniospinal Radiation Therapy
Dr. Mark Smith Genitourinary, Lymphomas & Leukemias, Central Nervous System, Palliation Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Prostate Brachytherapy, Craniospinal Radiation Therapy, Total Body Irradiation

Nuclear Medicine – one month
Residents must participate in six or more procedures using radioimmunotherapy, other targeted radiopharmaceuticals, or unsealed radioactive sources.

Residents are required to take a one month rotation in nuclear medicine to allow time for completing most, if not all, of the six required procedures described above. Also, residents should use this month to study the nuclear medicine goals and objectives set by the American Board of Radiology.

Physics and Dosimetry – three months

This required rotation should be completed during the resident’s PGY-3 year.

Exam Room

Elective Rotations – eight months

Residents in good standing may take up to eight months of electives during their last two years of residency. Electives are taken and designed with the purpose of enhancing your educational experience. Elective rotations can be flexible and individualized based on your learning needs.

Possible Electives

  • Clinical Radiation Oncology rotation – one to three months
  • Radiology [e.g. Neuroradiology] – one month
  • Arranged research – up to eight months
  • Arranged private practice experience – one to three months
  • Special Procedures Rotation (stereotactic radiosurgery, brachytherapy) – one to three months

Other Requirements

The ACGME also requires the following rotations**:

  • Medical Oncology - two months
  • Pathology - one month
  • Diagnostic Imaging - one month

** These requirements can be met by documented attendance at multidisciplinary conferences, at least four hours per month. In order for a conference to satisfy this requirement, medical oncology recommendations, pathology, and imaging must be discussed.
