ACGME Core Competencies
The Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) adopted the principle of competency-based graduate medical education and developed the following six general competencies: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, systems-based practice and professionalism. These were nationally implemented in 2001, and at the present time all accredited residency programs must ensure that each competency is actively taught and residents are evaluated in each domain.

Our Department has implemented these six core competencies within the curriculum, aligned all assessments with the competencies and currently is collecting outcome data. To learn more about the ACGME Outcome Project and the core competencies, visit: http://www.acgme.org/outcome/

Examinations
The Department is committed to preparing each resident for the ABR Board examinations. Several study sessions and resources are available to residents. Residents are required to take the following exams and quizzes:

In-Service Examination
An annual in-service exam, testing clinical, physics, and radiobiology knowledge, is given each Spring (usually mid March). This is a national peer reviewed examination and must be taken by all PGY-2 through PGY-5 residents. Results are used as a standardized evaluation of the residents progress in relation to their peers nationally, and to evaluate the individual resident’s progress year by year through the residency program.

RAPHEX Examination
An annual RAPHEX examination, testing residents’ physics knowledge, is given each summer. This too must be taken by all PGY-2 through PGY-5 residents.

Mock Oral Boards
Mock Oral Boards are given in either May or June of each year. All residents will rotate through faculty/disease site stations. Content of each exam would be determined by the faculty giving the test. Each exam lasts 25 minutes with 5 minutes between exams.

Online Monthly Quizzes
