Resident Research Opportunities
All residents are involved in a research project during each year of their radiation oncology training. The only exception to this rule is if the Program Director thinks that the resident needs further time to study because of marginal or poor performance in the clinical rotations or in-service examinations.
Residents choose a mentor from among the department faculty and select a research question early in the year. It is expected that projects are completed within the academic year and be submitted to or presentable at a national meeting. Projects can be clinical, physics or biology-related. These can be retrospective or prospective.
Residents must also write a manuscript with the assistance of their faculty mentor. Residents are encouraged to submit the results of their research projects for presentation at ASTRO or other meetings. Research results are presented by each resident during departmental Friday noon lectures. Residents may also be asked to present at the annual ISTRO conference.
The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Roentgen Resident Research Award will be given to the resident who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishment in his or her research projects. The faculty will select this resident annually.

Holman Research Pathway
The American Board of Radiology recognizes the shortage of physician investigators in diagnostic radiology and in radiation oncology. To address this shortage, a research pathway has been designed for individuals to simultaneously train in diagnostic radiology or radiation oncology and in basic science, clinical, or translational investigation. This new pathway is called the "ABR Holman Research Pathway," named for B. Leonard Holman, M.D., who first proposed this initiative.
Please visit the ABR website for an overview of the program.
