Surgery’s Future
Is Here Today

University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics began its surgical robotics program in 2002, introducing a new frontier of surgical technique and assuring that our facilities remained on the leading edge of surgical technology. In the summer of 2007, second robotic system—the da Vinci S® surgical system—was added, giving physicians High Definition (HD) technology, digital zoom capabilities, a fourth arm, and other remarkable advances allowing for even more surgical control and even greater possibilities.

The benefits of minimally invasive robotic surgery include:

  • Enhanced dexterity, precision, and control
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Better patient outcomes
  • Less risk for postoperative infection
  • Less scarring
  • Quicker return to normal daily activities

UI Hospitals and Clinics uses its surgical robot extensively, performing many procedures previously carried out by means of open surgery. The da Vinci® robot gives surgeons greater range of motion and more precise control of instruments. UI physicians pioneered many robotics procedures including Ladd’s procedure—correcting a condition in which the intestines do not rotate properly—removal of a colon, and removal of an adrenal carcinoma. UI Hospitals and Clinics was the first hospital in Iowa to perform the robotically assisted prostatectomy and the robotically assisted pyeloplasty.

At UI Hospitals and Clinics, surgeons in several specialties have gained the expertise necessary to provide patients with this state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgery option:
