Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery Services Home Services Patients Providers |
MyomectomyUniversity of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics now performs a minimally invasive approach to myomectomy. This is a surgical removal of uterine fibroids; which are benign (non-cancerous) tumors of the uterus. These tumors can cause an increase in menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, back pain, and, rarely, interfere with the function of the kidneys and bowel. They can also interfere in the process of a women becoming pregnant and carrying the baby to term. The myomectomy procedure can be done through a minimally invasive approach with the use of the da Vinci® robotic surgical system. This gives the surgeon the tools he needs to be able to close the incisions into the uterus made to remove the fibroids. The fibroids can then be cut up and removed through a very small incision. This allows the surgeon to avoid making larger abdominal incisions that take longer to heal. The minimally invasive approach with the use of a surgical robot requires 4 incisions that are only approximately 1/2 to 1 inch in length. Not every patient is a good candidate for a minimally invasive approach to myomectomy. Your physician will help you determine the best approach after she/he has obtained a medical history, performed a physical exam, and received reports from any testing that will aid with diagnosis.
