UI Obesity Surgery Program
Jamal's areas of interest include laparoscopic weight reduction surgery, laparoscopic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and other diseases of the foregut, laparoscopic endocrine and solid organ surgery and laparoscopic treatment of abdominal wall hernias.
Prior to his current appointment, Jamal served as an Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery Fellow at the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center of the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System and trained under James Maher, MD, Eric Demaria, MD and John Kellum, MD. He also completed his internship and General Surgery residency at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System.
Jamal has published extensively on clinical and patient-care aspects of Obesity Surgery and holds authorship of several book chapters and manuscripts on its management. Along with Dr. Isaac Samuel, he has played a crucial role in the establishment of the Obesity Surgery Program at UI Hospitals and Clinics as well as the Multidisciplinary Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence and successful funding of a New Clinical Initiative aimed at multimodal treatment of obesity.
