The Intellectual History of the Department of Urology
by Charles E. Hawtrey, MD
Introduction
Let me add my welcome and thanks to all the faculty, residents, former residents, and staff who have joined us in this recognition of the 75th year of the Department of Urology at the University of Iowa, which is also the second oldest urology department in the U.S. Even with the broadest brush strokes, it is eminently clear that medicine as well as urology have made Herculean strides in eliminating diseases, which devastated patients and consumed human life. There is fairly clear evidence in the medical literature that the complexity of treatment and advancements in care will change dramatically in the next 75 years so that what we discuss here today will be equally changed in 2077. It is doubtful that any of us will survive to reflect on the career of the eighth Chair of the Department and that person's faculty colleagues. They will look back at us with a clearer view of medical growth than we can have now. So let's look at what we think are the medical milestones in the development of our department as we see it now and let them correct us in the future.
I want to select out some events in the departmental history that demonstrate Iowa's contributions to the growth of Urology as a specialty and the intellectual development of medicine.
