Mini-fellowship in Urologic Laparoscopic,
Robotic and Endourologic Surgery

The Department of Urology currently offers a 5-day mini-fellowship opportunity in urologic laparoscopic, robotic, and endoscopic surgery. See below for registration and application information.

Course Director
Dr. Howard N. Winfield completed his urology residency at McGill University in Montreal and then finished a two-year Clinical and Research Fellowship in Endourology.

Beginning in the animal laboratory in 1988, Dr. Winfield began pioneering efforts in laparoscopic surgery and brought this to the clinical arena in 1990. He performed the world's first laparoscopic partial nephrectomy in 1992, at the University of Iowa. Dr. Winfield has directed and participated in numerous laparoscopic training seminars and is considered a leader in this rapidly expanding field. He helped spearhead the robotic daVinci surgery program at the University of Iowa in 2002.

Dr. Winfield is a Professor of Urology, and Director of Endourology and Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Educational Objectives
This program is offered to urologists who have completed residency training and are in active clinical practice where such a fellowship experience will benefit their patient population.

Upon completion of the program, the participant should be able to understand:

  1. The indications for laparoscopic renal ablative and reconstructive surgery.
  2. The indications and surgical steps in order to perform laparoscopic donor nephrectomy.
  3. The necessary steps in each of the above-mentioned laparoscopic procedures through hands-on exposure in the porcine model and possible live surgical demonstration.
  4. The emerging role of robotic surgery for radical prostatectomy and pyeloplasty.
  5. The mechanics of daVinciTM robotic surgery through live surgical demonstrations.
  6. Current treatment approaches to urolithiasis by live surgical demonstration, when possible, of ureteroscopy and percutaneous surgery.
