When The University of Iowa's legendary football coach Hayden Fry faced prostate cancer, he came to UI Health Care because it afforded him the best chance for a cure. "The researchers and physicians at the Department of Urology and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center are among the best in the world," Fry said, the winningest coach in UI football history. His treatments were successful and he envisioned even better treatments in the future for all men with prostate cancer. Working together, the University of Iowa Department of Urology and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at The University of Iowa have announced a $10 million campaign to fund the J. Hayden Fry Center for Prostate Cancer Research. The Center will be devoted to the research and clinical treatment of prostate cancer. Like thousands of men in Iowa and across the country, Fry's life has been touched by prostate cancer. He is dedicated to supporting research initiatives that will lead to more effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure. "I'm convinced that we are on the verge of enormous breakthroughs in understanding, treating, and even curing prostate cancer," he said. "With continued support, I am equally convinced that many of those breakthroughs are going to happen right here at UI Hospitals and Clinics," he said. The endowment honors Fry who retired from coaching in 1998. "I couldn't be more proud to have my name associated with a research program that is second to none," he said.
