J. Hayden Fry
Center for Prostate Cancer Research

When The University of Iowa's legendary football coach Hayden Fry faced prostate cancer, he came to UI Health Care because it afforded him the best chance for a cure.

"The researchers and physicians at the Department of Urology and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center are among the best in the world," Fry said, the winningest coach in UI football history. His treatments were successful and he envisioned even better treatments in the future for all men with prostate cancer.

Working together, the University of Iowa Department of Urology and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at The University of Iowa have announced a $10 million campaign to fund the J. Hayden Fry Center for Prostate Cancer Research. The Center will be devoted to the research and clinical treatment of prostate cancer.

Like thousands of men in Iowa and across the country, Fry's life has been touched by prostate cancer. He is dedicated to supporting research initiatives that will lead to more effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

"I'm convinced that we are on the verge of enormous breakthroughs in understanding, treating, and even curing prostate cancer," he said. "With continued support, I am equally convinced that many of those breakthroughs are going to happen right here at UI Hospitals and Clinics," he said.

The endowment honors Fry who retired from coaching in 1998. "I couldn't be more proud to have my name associated with a research program that is second to none," he said.

The proposed endowment will include:

  • Chair in Prostate Cancer Research
Seek additional world-class prostate cancer researcher
  • Clinical and Translational Prostate Cancer Research Endowment
Support research that will go from the bench to the bedside
  • Basic Mechanisms of Prostate Cancer Research Endowment
Support research within the Roland and Ruby Holden Cancer Research Laboratories
  • Educational Programming Endowment
Support shared facilities, equipment, and educational activities such as visiting speakers, which will help investigators remain at the cutting edge of prostate cancer research
  • Residents and Fellows Research Endowment
Funding to support the exploration of new ideas with great promise for the future

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men, after lung cancer. At the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center our physicians and scientists understand that advances in molecular and cellular biology are taking place at a faster pace than ever before.
