The pediatric urology experience covers the clinical aspects involved in patient evaluation and medical management in the clinical setting. There are four operative days each week, including endoscopic procedures on one day and open procedures on three days. Approximately 600 procedures are performed and 3,000 outpatients are evaluated annually.
Residents participate in clinical therapy decisions among 75 patients evaluated in the clinic weekly. The complexity of work-up may vary from second opinions to complete diagnostic evaluation in new patients without a prior diagnosis. Residents are expected to develop treatment plans and evaluation protocols.
Surgical experience is graduated according to the level of training. More complex procedures are performed with the senior residents, and minor procedures fall within the technical skills of the junior residents on service. All residents progress to levels of competence that assure excellent skills for clinical practice.
Residents participate in learning sessions on a daily basis to develop the knowledge for patient management. Residents participate with faculty in development of monthly conference topics in pediatric urology.
