The Urology Research Laboratories offer the opportunity to pursue a basic research laboratory project during a one-year rotation. The research rotation begins with developing plans for the specific project during the months of January and February just prior to beginning the research rotation in July of that year. Under the guidance of the Director of Resident Research and the Director of Urology Research, residents are encouraged to meet with the faculty to familiarize themselves with the various research projects available in the department.
The research rotation permits the resident to learn a variety of laboratory techniques, to read, understand, and interpret the scientific literature, and to present their data at departmental, regional, national, and international meetings. In addition, each resident is expected to publish the results of their project in a peer-reviewed journal.
Many residents are uncertain of the career path upon which they will embark following completion of their residency training. The research experience will enable the resident to make an informed choice by exposing them to an important aspect of an academic career.
