Urology residents are matched for a full six-year program. The first year complies with the Residency Review Committee requirement for pre-urology training. During the first year, the residents spend a total of eleven months on general surgery service, and one month on urology service. In the second year they spend eight months in a combined urology outpatient, surgery, and inpatient rotation, and one month each on renal medicine, pathology, surgical intensive care unit, interventional radiology, and urodynamics rotations. The third year of residency is entirely research. The fourth, fifth and sixth years of the program are entirely clinical urology. In the fourth year, eight months are spent at University Hospitals, and four months at the Iowa City Veterans Administration Medical Center.
The fifth year of the program includes a four-month rotation with a private Urology group in Mason City (located in north central Iowa), and eight months on the University Hospitals clinical Urology service. The Mason City rotation has been a part of the program for more than 25 years and has been a valuable private practice experience for our residents. In the sixth year, the chief residents spend four months each at University Hospitals, the Veterans Administration Medical Center, and a private practice rotation in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 25 miles north of Iowa City.
The University Hospitals call schedule places junior residents on first call approximately every five days, with backup from a senior resident. Senior residents are on first call approximately every eight days. The chief resident is on backup call the entire year. In-hospital call is limited to the first year.
