Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction is an increasingly important area of urology as the older patient population recognizes that effective therapies are available for this problem. Over the course of the last 10 years, there has been a decided change in approach to sexual dysfunction in older men. While 10 years ago surgical therapy with penile prosthesis constituted virtually the only effective therapy, and vascular surgery was suitable only for a small number of patients, there are now a variety of alternative therapies available. Initial therapy with oral medication may be followed by intra-urethral therapy, intracorporal injection and/or vacuum devices. Surgical therapy has become a fall-back option for selected patients.

The University of Iowa has an active sexual dysfunction clinic, seeing approximately 250 new patients each year. Treatments with pharmacotherapy and vacuum devices are taught to appropriate patients in the clinic. Vascular evaluations are performed by the UI's expert Radiology Department.

It is expected that residents will master all of the approaches to therapy, both with clinic and operating room experience.
