The Beat Goes On: A History of Cardiology

Prevention

As knowledge about the cardiovascular system and its role in the body's overall well-being continues to grow, an interest in heart-healthy living increases as well. This exhibition touches on the issue of heart disease prevention in terms of nutrition, exercise, and smoking. In addition to numerous pamphlets and handouts, a complete display of photographs, charts, and text explains the difference between cholesterol and fat and how each can contribute to heart disease. Museum visitors can also learn to take their blood pressure and listen to their heartbeat with a blood pressure cuff and a stethoscope similar to those used by physicians. The "target heart rate" chart shows the appropriate level of exertion for various age groups.
