A Century of Caring: The Health Sciences at the University of Iowa, 1850-1950: College of Pharmacy
What is a Pharmacist?
| In the mid-nineteenth century, the roles of physician and pharmacist were not distinct from one another. Although there was some specialization associated with each type of practitioner, both would diagnose illness and compound medicine to treat it. |
In 1880, Iowa passed the Iowa Pharmacy Law, separating the two. The role of the physician was to diagnose patients and prescribe any necessary medications. The role of the pharmacist was to compound or dispense those prescriptions. The Iowa State Pharmaceutical Association was the first organized group of pharmacists to stand behind a piece of pharmacy legislation. |
