In the Eye of the Beholder: Sight, Illusion, and Disorder

Injuries and Prevention

Eye injuries are responsible for four out of every hundred cases of blindness. Flying metal fragments and careless use of contact lenses are the leading causes of eye injuries. Ninety percent of all eye injuries can be prevented by following health and safety guidelines and wearing appropriate protective eyewear. Spectacles, goggles and face shields to protect eyes against chemicals, projectiles and other hazards are on display. Visitors are cautioned that the quality of protective eyewear varies widely; a national standard (ANSI) dictates the minimum protective power of any eye shield.
